lots of thanks to The Payroll Union, The Fargo Railroad Co., The Sopranistas, Neil McSweeney, Ash Gray, Roaming Son, William Barstow, Richard Kitson, Quiet Loner, E.R. Thorpe, Steve Roberts, Rod Picott and Mat Wale & Friends for a whole weekend of great music at The Greystones. Plus of course to those of you came along, many for more than one gig too (i think the record was three?). It was really rather good, even if i say so myself.

So that’s our 2016 for WagonWheel Presents… well and truly kicked off. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve heard this weekend, take a look at our listings for the months ahead here. rolled in to Shakespeares last night for our penultimate show of the year and certainly didn’t disappoint. Big thanks to Roaming Son, The Fargo Railroad Co. and The Black Thunder Revue for three storming sets and to all who came along.

WagonWheel Presents… returns for the final time in 2015 at Shakespeares on Thursday December 17th. Joining us to see the year out will be Big Convoy, King Quentin and David Venn. Rod Picott

It’s been 15 years since Rod Picott laid down his work belt, picked up an acoustic guitar and put a permanent end to his gig as a sheet rock hanger. He’d been writing music in private for years, but it was 2001’s Tiger Tom Dixon’s Blues — a debut album that bridged the gap between between folk and Americana — that officially introduced him as a singer/songwriter, kick starting one of the more acclaimed careers in modern-day roots music. Since then, he’s focused on a different kind of construction: building a catalog of songs that spin stories of hard work, heartache and the human condition.

On Fortune, he turns his focus inward, using himself — not the people around him — as the album’s main character. It’s his seventh solo release, written and recorded after years of heavy touring. Looking to make a record that could serve as a raw, authentic document of his live show, Picott recorded Fortune quickly, cutting six songs during his first day in the studio and finishing the entire album within a week and a half.

“I wanted to make a record where we captured performances, as opposed to imitating performances,” says Picott, who grew up in rural New England before relocating to Nashville. “Technology makes it so easy to do an imitation of what your best performance would sound like, but that’s not a real performance. That’s just what you would want yourself to sound like. I didn’t want to do that. For better or worse, Fortune is what I actually sound like.”

Musicians like Slaid Cleaves, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Fred Eaglesmith would claim it’s for the better. All three have recorded Picott’s songs, showing their support for a self-sufficient songwriter who plays most of his shows alone, relying on his voice and acoustic guitar to pack a punch. Fortune gave him a chance to put together a small band, though, with Will Kimbrough (Steve Earle, Guy Clark) handling the electric guitar parts and producer Neilson Hubbard (The Apache Relay, Matthew Ryan) doubling as the group’s drummer. With Lex Price joining in on bass, the group kept things as real and raw as possible. They just plugged in and played.

“A lot of these songs explore a sense of chance, of what might happen with your life,” Picott says. “Jeremiah” is the story of a soldier who doesn’t home from Iraq, “Uncle John” is a wry look at family dysfunction, and “Alicia” is a naked telling of a romantic break. The songs come from his life, and the details tell a vivid story. “There’s a sense of luck, and how things might unfold for someone. I thought that calling it Fortune would put a positive spin on that idea of chance and circumstance. It helps wrap up the feeling that runs through the record.”

Decades ago, during his sheet rock days, Picott promised himself that he wouldn’t release an album until he figured out who he was as a writer. Having a good voice wasn’t enough; he needed an opinion, a perspective, an ability to turn the world around him into music. With Fortune, he shines a light on himself, strips bare what he found rattling around in his heart and invites the listener to follow a deeper and more intimate journey.

Fortune is released in the UK this month and has already received a raft of 4 & 5 star reviews.

Mat Wale

Mat Wale has been writing and recording since early 2004. Rising out of the tumultuous Chesterfield music scene of the mid 2000s that spawned ‘avanGaad’, ‘Vigilante Wing’ and ‘The Culture Thieves’ among others. Whether working with Alt. Country behemoths ‘The Rackets’ (2006-2013 on and off), Grunge/Electro/ Folk duo ‘Arrogant Whale’ (2006-2010), Country Rock outfit ‘Big Convoy’ (2011-Present) or performing solo, Mat is untouched by his peers in terms of sheer volume of work. Unwaveringly sticking to his ‘Lo-Fi’ ideals and grass roots approach to making music, at last count he has independently released 18 E.P.s, 7 albums and provided the soundtrack to Welsh indie film ‘Big Font, Large Spacing’.

***QUIET LONER***

Quiet Loner

Quiet Loner is the pen-name of songwriter Matt Hill.

Quiet Loner sings songs about love and fear, life and death, despair and hope. On a live stage Hill is an understated yet powerful performer delivering a show that is emotional, political, occasionally angry but nearly always gentle and human.

Inspired by the storytelling traditions of American folk and country music (he doesn’t hide his admiration for Van zandt, Prine, Waits or Kristofferson), Hill’s songs also have a distinctly British lyrical bite (he loves Morrisey, Bragg and Costello).

His most recent album ‘GREEDY MAGICIANS’ is a collection of contemporary protest songs seething with disgust and shot through with melancholy at the state of our coalition-led nation. Recorded in May 2012 in front of a live audience at Sacred Trinity Church in Salford, the powerful songwriting draws on Hill’s own family history to tell a familiar story of struggle against power.

In 2013 he performed at Manchester’s People’s History Museum in a special show telling the story of the album’s creation. He was invited by Billy Bragg to perform on the Leftfield stage at Glastonbury Festival where he appeared in a songwriters circle alongside Bragg, Amanda Palmer and Sean MacGowan.

Hill has long been a familiar figure on the UK’s Americana and alt.country scene and his debut album was voted Americana UK Album of the Year 2004. His second album SPECTROLOGY (2010) topped the Americana UK album chart and got 4-star reviews from the likes of Uncut and The Daily Mirror and radio play from BBC6 Music.  His live credentials have include support slots for Lambchop, Joe Pernice, Neko Case. Richmond Fontaine, Mark Eitzel and Chris Mills.

Boss Caine

Boss Caine are a folk/Americana collective from York, England. A tight knit, but evolving, line-up of local musicians centred around the songs of front man and ‘Yorkshire Cowboy’ – Daniel Lucas (aka GT Turbo), a man described as ‘having a voice that makes Louis Armstrong sound kinda girly’.

Boss Caine released their debut album: ‘The Ship That Sailed’, on independent label Little Num Num Music, in 2010. The record contains a selection of tunes written by Lucas over the last few years; a time that saw him leave his home town for London, before returning to York and putting together the line-up of local musicians that would become Boss Caine. Years of hard living, hard drinking and love turned sour inform an album that at times visits some quite dark places, but is ultimately carried along by a healthy dose of Northern positivity and stoicism.

The album was recorded in the North Yorkshire countryside at ‘The Factory of Unprofessional Sound’ and sees Boss Caine’s core team of Lucas, Andy Gaines and Sam Forrest joined by many of the musicians who have played in the band over the last few years. The follow up The Rhythm And The Rhyme is out now.

***E.R. THORPE***

The Listeners

Having called time on The Listeners, E.R. Thorpe embarks on a fully solo career.

Thorpe was born into music – her mother taught her to finger-pick, introducing her to the music of PJ Harvey, Sandy Denny, Susan Vega, Roy Harper and Bob Dylan along the way; Her father Kevin was well respected on the blues scene for his albums with Out Of The Blue; And her aunt managed Welsh psychedelic legends Man.

Despite this heritage Thorpe has shaped her own evocative sound. Sometimes wilfully naive, sometimes considered and precise – her choice of chords is particular and unusual and her finger-picking weaves a strange atmosphere – the likes of which you’d more likely find in a Lynch film or a novel by Bolano than in the sculpted folk of her inspirations. And like those who inspire her – Nick Cave, Patti Smith, William Blake, she loves to muse on nature & religion: God, the devil, good and evil, and like the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood she tries to tell it like it is – to reveal both the beauty and the devastation of life: Red Dust portrays human insignificance under darkening skies; Dinner For One traces the fading past of a destroyed relationship; You wouldn’t think that it took years for Thorpe to accept her own arresting voice and lyrical vision. Time well spent in distillation perhaps: This is music that is close to the source. These are songs, born of tradition, alive in the present day, revealing & fragile, executed spare and sharp.

Roaming Son

Roaming Son are a four piece band from Sheffield. They draw influences from the sounds of the earliest raucous rock ‘n’ roll bands of the 50’s, but adding a distinct sound that is refreshingly modern. They have honed their live show supporting bands such as Kat Men, Big Boy Bloater, Dan Baird & Homemade Sin, Warner E. Hodges, Jason & The Scorchers to name a few. Expect jungle drums, dirty twangy slapback guitars, greasy bass and vocals that range from heartfelt to lowdown and earthy.

In 2013 the band released debut EP ‘History Of Violence’ and were named ‘Best Live Act’ at the Sheffield Scenester awards. In 2015 they released their latest EP ‘Blood On My Hands’.

Richard Kitson

From a young age Sheffield born Richard Kitson immersed himself in the music that he loved; relentlessly emulating the sounds he heard on records from Bob Dylan to Big Bill Broonzy, Robert Johnson to Rory Gallagher. He first taught himself the harmonica and dabbled with drums before making guitar technique not merely a passion, but an artistic obsession.

Moving on from a successful first album it was something of a revelation to discover the music of Bert Jansch, Davy Graham and John Martyn. Kitson adopted a new finger-picking style that not only unlocked a world of new potential in his personal playing; but also released a new depth of songwriting that has become a primary focus. Self taught by listening to the greats and with a deep sense of the tradition and craft of blues and folk, Richard is a musician’s musician – it all comes from the soul.

From his first eponymous album release in 2003 Kitson’s sound has matured and developed along with a career supporting some of the biggest names in folk and blues around the UK. He has regularly supported well-respected artists from across the globe such as Michael Marra, Otis Gibbs, Boo Hewerdine, John Tamms, Wizz Jones and Peggy Seeger.

Richard has gigged from London to Edinburgh; famous blues clubs to music cafes and while he’s shared bigger stages at city concert venues he often prefers the intimacy and opportunity to connect with the audience through carefully orchestrated performances at smaller venues.

William Barstow

William Barstow has recorded and played live throughout the country with former bands The Dead Delta and The Ruby Jacks. Throughout this period he complied a selection of bluesy folk songs that didn’t fit into the framework of a hardened rock band but require a more intimate and spacious setting. His most recent release is The Hummingbird EP.

Neil McSweeney

Neil McSweeney (born Irvine, Scotland) is a songwriter and musician based in Sheffield, England. His acoustic guitar playing style combines folk, blues and country influences but it is his voice, likened by The Guardian to a male Tracy Chapman, and his direct and personal lyrics for which he is most recognised.

McSweeney’s debut album, Remember To Smile was released in 2006 by Sheffield independent label, LM Music. Tracks from the album attracted national radio play from BBC Radio 2 and the digital station BBC Radio 6 Music. This led to Postcards being released as a single by Kids Records, the singles arm of Warner Music UK subsidiary 14th Floor Records. Further national radio exposure followed including the track being playlisted by XFM. Around this time Neil also accompanied his friend Stoney both on record, on tour and in session for BBC Radio 2’s Dermot O’Leary at Maida Vale Studios.

Extensive touring in the UK followed before second album, Shoreline, emerged in 2009. This was self-released and attracted positive reviews in the national press as well as the attention of fellow Sheffield musician, Richard Hawley. Following support sets at The Crucible in Sheffield and the Royal Festival Hall, McSweeney accompanied Hawley as main support on the European leg of his Truelove’s Gutter tour.

During a hiatus from touring in 2011 and 2012, to spend more time with his young family, McSweeney developed friendships with musicians from the English folk and roots scene. This developed into collaborations which formed the basis for an EP (The Seventeen EP, May 2013) and a third full length album (Cargo) released on Harbour Song Records in 2013.

Late 2015 saw the release of EPs from two new projects, a duo recording with Vera Van Heeringen, and the Gluepot collaboration with Lucy Farrell and M.G. Boulter.

***ASH GRAY***

Ash Gray

At long last Texas songwriter Ash Gray finally gets around to releasing his debut solo album. The title Once I Got Burned is hopefully not a comment on his nigh-on twenty year career fronting The High-Class Family Butchers and Ash Gray & The Girls, or holding down the lead guitarist’s job in various rock bands in Austin and New York. But it does see a shift away from the gypsy punkgrass of the Butchers and the psych-pop of The Girls as Ash turns in an album of stone Texas country-rock.

Born in the US to parents form Yorkshire, Gray first began to make inroads into the UK music scene when he assembled the Anglo-American ‘punk-grass’ band, the High-Class Family Butchers during a late-90s sojourn in London. Achieving notoriety (and not-inconsiderable airplay) with their back-porch covers of pop classics and guerrilla-gigging, the Butchers have continued over the years with a flexible line-up including members of Menlo Park, The Ralfe Band and folk poster-boy Seth Lakeman’s band. For a time they even included Harper ‘Son of Paul’ Simon, oddly enough.

Relocating to New York with short-lived hard rock throwback band Cycle Sluts From Hell, Gray began shifting gears after realising that his female guitarist KG was a great harmony singer who blended perfectly with his backing vocalist Helen. He formed Ash Gray & The Girls in late 2008 as an acoustic trio, with him on vocals and guitar and these two singers. After some fine-tuning and the occasional personnel-change, the band launched the album Born In The Summer with a four-night stand at SXSW in Austin in 2012. Returning to the UK at the end of 2013, Ash is currently residing in Sheffield, the land of his forefathers. The circle remains unbroken.
