It was great to see so many friendly faces (especially some in WagonWheel T-shirts too), and lots of people sticking around for most of the day. But a bit of a rest now…

***STONEY*** : 9.30pm Bard’s Bar

It’s astonishing to think that it’s been 12 years since Stoney’s much celebrated genre-defying debut “The Scene & The Unseen” was first released – it’s a testament to the timelessness of Mark Stoney’s unique songwriting & production talent that it still sounds fresh today. Stoney’s keen ear for classic melody combined with unique production and a sharp lyrical potency opened doors for the gifted indie juggernaut on both sides of the Atlantic. Now back in Sheffield working on new projects and new songs set to be released soon on Hudson Records.

***JOE SOLO*** 8.40pm Stable Yard

Joe Solo is an award-winning musician, writer, poet, activist, broadcaster and washing machine engineer from Scarborough. His musical odyssey began in 1987 fronting a bash-em-out band at school, and has seen him play seven countries either as lynchpin of pop-punk upstarts Lithium Joe or hammering out his unique brand of Folk, Punk and Blues in his own right.

***THE BARKER RANCH HIGHWAYMEN*** : 7.40pm Bard’s Bar

Featuring the combined talents of Ash Gray, Andy P. Davison and Jim Widdop, The Barker Ranch Highwaymen bring West Coast-esque harmonies via Austin TX, Chesterfield and Derby. Three great musicians make for one outstanding trio.

***MAT WALE*** 7pm Stable Yard

Mat Wale has been writing and recording since early 2004. Rising out of the tumultuous Chesterfield music scene of the mid 2000s that spawned ‘avanGaad’, ‘Vigilante Wing’ and ‘The Culture Thieves’ among others. With Alt. Country behemoths ‘The Rackets’ (2006-2013 on and off), Grunge/Electro/ Folk duo ‘Arrogant Whale’ (2006-2010), Country Rock outfit ‘Big Convoy’ (2011-Present) or performing solo, Mat has ordinarily been a fixture on the local live circuit until moving away last year, so this makes for a now rare Sheffield show.

***THE HOLDING HANDS*** : 6.20pm Bard’s Bar

The brand new band featuring the songs of Tom Baxendale and members of The Payroll Union among the line up.

***PAUL HANDYSIDE*** : 5.40pm Stable Yard

Paul Handyside is a folk and roots singer songwriter. He began his musical career with eighties indie darlings Hurrah! The jangle pop band had album releases on Kitchenware and Arista Records from 1982 to 1991 and toured extensively worldwide. During the nineties he toured and recorded with friend and Kitchenware labelmate Martin Stephenson. Handyside formed Bronze in 2001. Still embracing chiming, Rickenbacker driven pop, and increasingly alt country, they released two albums, The Statue in the Stone and A Common Prayer. His debut solo album Future’s Dream, a combination of pop, country and modern day hymns was released in 2007 to great reviews. Latest album Tide, Timber & Grain saw elements of traditional British folk and sixties protest songs emerging in Handyside’s now well established and diverse musical palette.

***THE SWELLS*** : 4.50pm Bard’s Bar

Tripped out guitar pop band The Swells are a North West based 5 piece featuring former Walton Hesse frontman Matt Grayson. Simplistic, Big Star-esque songwriting awash with the noise and ambience you’d find on a Sonic Youth or Spacemen 3 LP. Sentiment and melody meet space and noise.

***ANDY WHITEHOUSE*** : 4.20pm Stable Yard

Andy Whitehouse is recognised as a talented songwriter with a predilection for story and illuminating metaphor. He launched his first solo album, Almost Home in February 2017. This sits alongside two albums by the band he fronts, The Silver Darlings, on the Anklebreka Records label. He has performed across the UK supporting Martin Stephenson, Mick Thomas, Curtis Eller and has guested with Chris Wood. Likened to Nick Cave, Jacques Brel and Leonard Cohen, his songs are performed to a backdrop of “ethereal and atmospheric” guitar. While he continues to front The Silver Darlings he also travels solo, sharing stories of weary pilgrims, drunken sailors, and battered optimists stumbling through relationships with mysterious saints, magical changelings and jaded lovers. His songs are characteristically set in times and places of change and uncertainty – tidal, liminal, darkening and yet patterned with warmth and hope.

***THE DECEMBER FLOWERS*** 3.40pm Bard’s Bar

Gemma Gray plays Americana & folk tunes inspired by Stateside travels, recounting tales of love, dreams and all the things in between. Some of those songs formed the basis of debut solo EP My Joshua Tree that was released last year. 2019 brings a new full band sound with The December Flowers.

***GEORGINA GILMARTIN*** 3.10pm Stable Yard

Georgina Gilmartin is an alternative folk singer/songwriter, who since making her debut at an open mic in 2011 has become a stalwart of the Barnsley music scene. Observations on life, people, and other assorted objects, have produced several EPs worth a material.

***THE FAREWELL STATE*** : 2.30pm Bard’s Bar

Returning from a period of stasis with new members, new songs and a new album to be released before the year is out, The Farewell State are a ragged glory quartet with ear-worm melodies and emotional country-punk soul. It ain’t always pretty but it’s usually tuneful.

***BUFFALO GHOST*** : 2pm Stable Yard

Buffalo Ghost is a music collective created in 2017 to write and record music featuring collaborators and friends. Based around the songs of singer/songwriter Joe Armitage, 2018 saw several band performances of alternative orchestral folk, while currently Joe is playing a handful of solo dates around the release of a more stripped back acoustic album.

***THE FARGO RAILROAD CO.***

The Fargo Railroad Co.

Jody and Mike wanted to start a County Rock / Americana styled band based around the songs they had been writing, Mike mentioned this to Andy who was immediately interested, even more so when he had the chance to meet Leon’s playing at which point the line-up was fixed (Leon just didn’t know it yet) as Andy insisted he should be the drummer (or else!).

Our first get together / rehearsal / jam was ‘way back’ in last December and immediately there was an ease of playing together followed by much grinning!

Jody has been singing and playing all over the place for a good few years, his song writing style is kind of storyteller and despite being from Conisbrough his singing voice sounds anything but!

Leon (Jody’s brother) has drummed up and down the country with a variety of rock/hard rock and ABBA tribute acts.

Mike plays the geetar and is responsible for the pleasing electric geetar noises be they bendy, swirly or angular.

Finally there’s Andy, who’s played a bit of bass here n there over the last 20years or so… and is a bit of an audio geek. Helping us create our sound and slowly craft it into a pleasing sound.

The Texas dive bar Southern Rock of The Fargo Railroad Co. was born.

***THE FAREWELL STATE***

The Farewell State

Starting out as one voice from local widescreen rock outfit The Letter, with influences ranging from the likes of Fugazi and Afghan Whigs to Sparklehorse and My Morning Jacket, The Farewell State was originally an outlet for new songs of Simon Roberts. Having now morphed into an instrument-swapping Alt-country/rock four piece, channelling the sounds of the likes of Bon Iver, Ryan Adams and even Neil Finn into the mix,  the band are crafting something that lasts with noise and melody.

***MORDRAKE***

Mordrake

From the heavenly fields of Leeds comes a thunderous force that will blow your face off and then put it back on again, upside down. Mordrake are here, and it feels as though the world has woken from a coma. When God said “let there be light!” what he really meant was “let there be Mordrake!” And there was.

With the angelic pure tone of “celestial” Katy Raine’s unique voice, backed to amazing effect by Johnny Hart’s timeless, brooding cacophony, Mordrake embrace both good and evil and turn the combination back into… Mordrake. Mo’s timeless percussion settles beneath the songs like a snow-topped peak reaching into an infinite sunset. Forget The Beatles. Forget the invention of the wheel. Put away your bibles, turn off your televisions and rise from your sofas. Mordrake have come. And there’s going to be an almighty mess.

Last year they released debut album Every Shadow Is A Ghost.

Slow, introspective Americana that delivers an emotional punch with the whitest of gloves.” – Sloucher.org
