it proved to be only 60% of a weekender, but what we were left with was pretty special. Thanks to everybody that joined us on Friday and Saturday, not least Rod Picott, Boss Caine, M&J Blues, Andy P. Davison, Franc Cinelli, The Fargo Railroad Co. and The Lucky Strikes for the exceptional entertainment.

Sadly the weather put paid to Sunday’s two gigs at The Greystones, and left us hanging on 298 WagonWheel Presents… shows promoted. But we’ll be back for more very soon. Next will likely be Monday May 14th when we welcome Kirsty McGee & Quiet Loner. Keep an eye on the Gigs page for details of this and more new shows we’ll be adding over the next few weeks.

***UPDATE***

Unfortunately due to the weather and travel conditions for all concerned, we’ve sadly had to cancel today’s (Sunday) shows. For anybody who has bought advance tickets, refunds will be available from point of purchase. Really sorry to have to do this after three great shows already this weekend. We hope to arrange alternative dates for all the acts who were due to play today as soon as possible.

Over the weekend of March 16th, 17th and 18th, WagonWheel Presents… brings our second WagonWheelWeekender to The Greystones, Sheffield. We’ll be bringing you five shows across the three days, featuring the usual mix of local, UK and international talent that you’d come to expect from a WagonWheel show.

On Friday night we’re joined by US singer/songwriter Rod Picott, playing songs from brand new double album. The sprawling twenty-two song Out Past The Wires ranges from whispery ballads to guitar driven rockers and hits every musical spot between. Opening the show will be Boss Caine, the main musical vehicle of hard living, permanently gigging, story telling, troubadouring, award winning, UK singer songwriter, Daniel Lucas.

Saturday afternoon sees the first of two “in the round” shows, when sharing songs and stories will be father & son duo M&J Blues, free-wheeling troubadour Franc Cinelli and The Black Thunder Revue frontman Andy P. Davison playing a solo set. All three acts will be on stage from the off for this early show.

We’ve a fine double bill of bands for Saturday night, with local favourites The Fargo Railroad Co. joined by The Lucky Strikes. The Fargo Railroad Co. are a southern rock / Americana inspired 4 piece band, whilst The Lucky Strikes have been described as “Blues/ Garage/ Americana, spaghetti-western, fiddle powered, howlin’, heavin’ rock and roll”. We think that adds up to a great show. Franc Cinelli returns to get the night under way too with a short solo/acoustic set.

For Sunday afternoon we return to the “in the round” format, this time in the company of Fargo’s Jody Davies airing some solo material, Charlie Tophill strumming out cheerful pessimism on an acoustic guitar and a man who’s been playing WagonWheel shows almost as long as we’ve been doing them, John Batchelor.

Finally on Sunday night, Southern Tenant Folk Union return to Sheffield with their ‘work in progress’ tour, road testing songs from forthcoming new album Willie Rough. Southern Tenant Folk Union are the Edinburgh based six-piece string band that over a series of albums have produced a thought provoking and arresting take on roots & folk music. Support comes from Paul Handyside, the folk and roots singer songwriter who began his musical career with eighties indie darlings Hurrah!

Doors for all evening shows open at 8pm and shows finish by 11pm.

Doors for afternoon shows open at 3pm and shows finish by 5.45pm.

a better night than one M&J duo? Two M&J duos of course. Amazing show as always from Josh Harty at The Greystones last night, complete with some guest guitar from Sheffield slinger Mark Lyall, a really special “i was there” one off. Superb opening from M&J Blues once again too. Thanks to them and Josh and you if you were there.

We’ll be back at The Greystones on October 30th with Wild Ponies and Mat Wale (details here), but next for WagonWheel Presents… we return to Shakespeares tomorrow night in the company of Case Hardin, Paul McClure and A Prayer Away. More good times await, a full preview can be found here, we hope you can join us then.

***M&J BLUES***

M&J Blues are father and son Mark & Jeff Lyall. They’re regular performers at many Sheffield venues doing their bluesy country rock ‘n’ roll thing. They recorded and released live album In The Presence Of Friends in 2016 and continue to delight their ever growing army of fans.

***FRANC CINELLI***

Bucking the trend with his free-wheeling alternative folk Franc Cinelli is the songwriters’ songwriter. From uptempo torch songs to blues laden road journals and lovestruck serenades to defiant, prison outlaw ballads; Franc has carved his own musical path. Like all good troubadours, he spent a lot of time touring by himself before making records. Not just the length and breadth of the UK (quite literally from Hastings to Stornoway) but throughout the East Coast of the USA, Texas & Tennessee, and in his native Italy.

***ANDY P. DAVISON***

When he’s not playing shows as part of The Black Thunder Revue, Andy flies solo with his trusty resonator guitar. The sound is rooted in Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll, but draws on many styles.

Kasey McGoo to drop by last night for our last show of the year at The Greystones, though you, me and Matt Castelein might know her better as Kelley McRae. Big thanks to Kelley & Matt plus M&J Blues and The Fargo Railroad Co. for three outstanding sets, and of course all you who were there too.

WagonWheel Presents… returns to The Backroom in 2017, keep an eye on the Gigs page for details on new shows coming soon. We’ve still plenty happening at Shakespeares before the end of this year though, including our next show on Saturday October 29th when we’re joined by Paul Littlewood, E.R. Thorpe, Anytown and Rory Cannon. You can find the full details for this show here, we hope to see you again then.

All those who joined us at The Greystones last night know the answer (even if they haven’t got the joke yet). They also know how fun an evening with new songs and stories from Otis Gibbs can be. Thanks to Otis for another great evening, Franc Cinelli for a fine opening set, and all you who came along too.

WagonWheel Presents… returns to The Backroom on Tuesday October 11th when we welcome back the Kelley McRae duo for what promises to be another special night, especially since completing the bill will be M&J Blues and The Fargo Railroad Co. who play an acoustic set. You can find the full preview for this show here. See you then?
