On Tuesday October 30th, WagonWheel Presents… welcomes Rachel Harrington back to The Greystones when she returns to these shores with a brand new covers album I Wish I Was In Austin, ahead of the 2019 release of the long awaited new record Hush The Wild Horses. Opening the show will be Boss Caine. Advance tickets priced at £10 are available from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/443305 and the venue, or entry on the night will be £12. Doors open 7.45pm.

***RACHEL HARRINGTON***

From the Pentecostal pines of Oregon, Rachel Harrington has been a Bob Harris favorite for some time now. Her fifth studio album (out 2019), is a home-coming of sorts. Hush The Wild Horses is the result of five years largely off the road, homesteading in Oregon, being with family.

The stories behind this harvest of songs include a brother with a meth addiction, a Vietnam veteran uncle who commited suicide at age 40, and a grandmother who died while holding Rachel’s hand.

“It’s definitely my most personal record,” she says.

Harrington has played major festivals throughout Europe and the US, made four live appearances on BBC’s legendary Bob Harris Show, and reached millions of listeners through airplay at Starbucks. A 2011 winner in Merlefest’s esteemed songwriting contest (previous winners include Gillian Welch and Tift Merritt), this is Rachel’s much-anticipated return to recording and touring.

***BOSS CAINE***

Boss Caine is the main musical vehicle of hard living, permanently gigging, story telling, troubadouring, award winning, UK singer songwriter, Daniel Lucas. He is often joined by any number of incredibly talented guest musicians.

Boss Caine released their debut album: ‘The Ship That Sailed’, on independent label Little Num Num Music, in 2010. The record contains a selection of tunes written by Lucas over the last few years; a time that saw him leave his home town for London, before returning to York and putting together the line-up of local musicians that would become Boss Caine. Years of hard living, hard drinking and love turned sour inform an album that at times visits some quite dark places, but is ultimately carried along by a healthy dose of Northern positivity and stoicism.

Follow up The Rhythm And The Rhyme brought further acclaim in 2012, and  brand new record Loved By Trouble, Troubled By Love was released earlier this year.

On Wednesday August 30th, WagonWheel Presents… welcomes Curtis Eller’s American Circus back to The Greystones. Curtis Eller’s American Circus is preparing to embark on a 16 date tour of the UK. The iconoclastic banjo player will be accompanied by a brutish, inelegant backing band drawn from a stable of incendiary musicians from the US and England. The American Circus, have developed a devoted international following based on dynamic, unhinged live performances and a disquieting catalog of strange recordings populated by a ghastly parade of historical luminaries. Lace up your dancing shoes. We’ll see you under the dusty canvas of the bigtop! Plus support from Richard Kitson. Advance tickets priced at £10 are available from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/397577 and the venue (12-6pm). Entry on the night will be £12. Doors open 7.45pm.

***CURTIS ELLER’S AMERICAN CIRCUS***

Curtis Eller is a banjo player, songwriter and rock & roll singer. After beginning his show business career at the age of seven as a juggler and acrobat, the Detroit native turned to the banjo and lit out for New York City where he rose to obscurity as “New York’s angriest yodeling banjo player”. Siting Buster Keaton, Abraham Lincoln and Elvis Presley as his primary musical influences, Eller became a staple of the beer halls, burlesque houses and underground theaters of the eastern seaboard. Fame proved elusive.

Having spent years toiling in the musical sweatshops of the industrial north, Eller uprooted his family and resettled in some faded, tobacco town in the North Carolina Piedmont to begin the arduous task of assembling a new version of his band, The American Circus. The latest version of the ensemble is a brutish and inelegant rock & roll outfit specializing in banjo music for funerals, gospel tunes for atheists and novelty dance fads for amputees. A lavish, Hollywood, dance sequence unfolding on the floor of a Chicago meatpacking plant in 1894.

Eller’s numerous compositions describe a dreamlike vision of American history where all points in time have collapsed into one. Past recordings have seen a ghastly parade of historical luminaries, from Abraham Lincoln and Buster Keaton to Amelia Earhart and Joe Louis, sharing the spotlight with a host of Civil War generals and corrupt 19th century politicians.

The group’s latest phonographic recording, “How to Make It in Hollywood”, is a compact collection of glittery show tunes, sentimental tear-jerkers and rock & roll rave-ups whose lyrics are populated with two-bit prize fighters, Hollywood has-beens, lapsed gospel singers and forgotten pop stars. Eller relentlessly tours the US and Europe with an expanding and contracting cast of misfits. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, a new album is also due later this year.

***RICHARD KITSON***

In 2014 Folk Radio UK described Richard Kitson as ‘one of the best guitar pickers of his generation’. Kitson has earned this reputation over a decade of honing his skills both as a solo acoustic performer and occasional band leader. Kitson’s love of the blues began when he heard the song ‘Bye Bye Bird’ by Sonny Boy Williamson II not long after he started teaching himself to play the harmonica at the age of eleven. A desire to learn the guitar soon followed. After pestering his parents for an acoustic guitar they relented and by the age of fourteen he was teaching himself to play under the influence of Bob Dylan, Big Bill Broonzy, Robert Johnson, Rory Gallagher and Mississippi John Hurt. These musicians (among many others) helped Kitson develop his fingerstyle and slide guitar playing alongside his original song writing.

From 2001 Kitson began honing his performing skills in Sheffield folk clubs and other venues in and around South Yorkshire, often supporting established touring artists such as Wilko Johnson, Otis Gibbs, Peggy Seeger and John Tamms. In a typical set Kitson can be found playing classic country and delta blues covers by the likes of his aforementioned influences alongside his self-penned folk/blues style songs. A skilled raconteur, Kitson often embellishes his sets with humorous links and background stories to his songs.

Richard Kitson has quietly emerged as one of the best guitar pickers of his generation; one who marries blues and folk styles into a fresh new sound.” Folk Radio UK

When I grow up I want to play guitar like Richard Kitson.” Otis Gibbs

***BOSS CAINE***

Boss Caine

Boss Caine are a folk/Americana collective from York, England. A tight knit, but evolving, line-up of local musicians centred around the songs of front man and ‘Yorkshire Cowboy’ – Daniel Lucas (aka GT Turbo), a man described as ‘having a voice that makes Louis Armstrong sound kinda girly’.

The album was recorded in the North Yorkshire countryside at ‘The Factory of Unprofessional Sound’ and sees Boss Caine’s core team of Lucas, Andy Gaines and Sam Forrest joined by many of the musicians who have played in the band over the last few years. The follow up The Rhythm And The Rhyme is out now.

***JOE SOLO***

Joe Solo

Joe Solo is an award-winning musician, writer, poet, activist, broadcaster and washing machine engineer from Scarborough. His musical odyssey began in 1987 fronting a bash-em-out band at school, and has seen him play seven countries either as lynchpin of pop-punk upstarts Lithium Joe or hammering out his unique brand of Folk, Punk and Blues in his own right.

On top of releasing fourteen albums since 2004, Solo has written books and had them written about him; runs a research project on the Hull Pals Battalions in the First World War; has worked with underprivileged children to help them write their lives in song; run a weekly radio show; and still found time to open for the likes of Chris Wood, David Rovics, Attila the Stockbroker, Otis Gibbs, Robb Johnson, Edgar Broughton, TV Smith, Paul Simmonds, Emily Portman, Pete Wylie, The Blockheads and Billy Bragg; whilst his songs have been played by John Peel on Radio One, Mike Harding on Radio Two and Tom Robinson on  BBC6Music.

In May 2015 Joe helped create WE SHALL OVERCOME, a campaign pushing for a positive response from the music community to the poverty and hardship inflicted on ordinary people by the government’s austerity program. Since October 2015 the movement has put on 550 gigs in 135 towns and cities across 8 countries on 3 continents raising an estimated £225,000 in cash, food, clothing and bedding for those hardest hit. WSO scooped the People’s Choice gong at the annual Yorkshire Grassroots Music Awards on 16th October 2015, and on the back of his efforts The Morning Star named Solo ‘Human Being of the Year’.

2016 saw Joe and The Hurriers front-man Tony Wright collaborate on ‘May Day Festival of Solidarity‘. The event, which brought together voices from music, poetry and politics to celebrate International Worker’s Day, took place in Barnsley on  May 1st and a packed house saw stunning performances from artists as varied as Grace Petrie, Phil ‘Swill’ Odgers, Attila the Stockbroker, Lizzie Nunnery & Vidar Norheim and The Wakes. 2017’s event is in planning.

In October 2016 he was awarded the ‘Outstanding Songwriting’ prize at Yorkshire Gig Guide Grassroots Music Awards for his work on the album ‘Never Be Defeated’ telling the stories of the men and women of Hatfield during the 1984-85 Miner’s Strike.

Live, Solo has a growing reputation as both a performer and raconteur, being both thought-provoking, comical and punch-the-air political often in the same breath. He is not an artist you forget in a hurry.

***THE SEA WHORES***

the-sea-whores-new

All the way from some mysterious corner of Yorkshire…. The Sea Whores build a cinematic musical landscape of old world folk songs lost at sea and modern mysteries of doomed love, lust and obsession.

Mayhem, murder, madness and a rare cock-eyed view of bawdy ballads, all accompanied by steel guitar, banjo and fiddle creates a brand of lo-fi junkyard skiffle that makes their musical details reassuringly the same, yet completely different to all others, with brooding atmosphere, dark humour and kinetic energy flowing through this rusty old time fairground ride of a band. Holy, dark and Royal; hold onto your hats!

***E.R. THORPE***

e-r-thorpe

Having called time on The Listeners, E.R. Thorpe embarks on a fully solo career.

Thorpe was born into music – her mother taught her to finger-pick, introducing her to the music of PJ Harvey, Sandy Denny, Susan Vega, Roy Harper and Bob Dylan along the way; Her father Kevin was well respected on the blues scene for his albums with Out Of The Blue; And her aunt managed Welsh psychedelic legends Man.

Despite this heritage Thorpe has shaped her own evocative sound. Sometimes wilfully naive, sometimes considered and precise – her choice of chords is particular and unusual and her finger-picking weaves a strange atmosphere – the likes of which you’d more likely find in a Lynch film or a novel by Bolano than in the sculpted folk of her inspirations. And like those who inspire her – Nick Cave, Patti Smith, William Blake, she loves to muse on nature & religion: God, the devil, good and evil, and like the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood she tries to tell it like it is – to reveal both the beauty and the devastation of life: Red Dust portrays human insignificance under darkening skies; Dinner For One traces the fading past of a destroyed relationship; You wouldn’t think that it took years for Thorpe to accept her own arresting voice and lyrical vision. Time well spent in distillation perhaps: This is music that is close to the source. These are songs, born of tradition, alive in the present day, revealing & fragile, executed spare and sharp.

The brand new EP ‘Lion’ is out now.

The songwriting and vocal talents of Matt Taylor made him part of the creative driving force behind Sheffield’s premier folk-rockers, Dead Like Harry, a band who have built a big reputation in recent years for their innate showmanship and rousing tunes. As Anytown Matt explores a more acoustic based, folk sound, from-the-heart songs that have won commissions for TV and exposure on national and local radio, as well as invitations to perform at major festivals and supports for major artists. Anytown has also featured fellow Dead Like Harry members Alice Faraday and Robin Baker among others. Tonight Matt plays a solo set.

***KELLEY McRAE duo***

kelley-mcrae-new

Kelley McRae called New York City home for many years, cutting her teeth in the vaunted singer/songwriter scene and honing her craft at legendary clubs like The Living Room, The Rockwood Music Hall and the Bowery Ballroom. In 2011 McRae teamed up with guitarist Matt Castelein, and the duo traded in their Brooklyn apartment for a VW camper van and hit the road full time. Kelley and Matt travelled extensively across America those first few years, performing hundreds of shows and finding inspiration for new songs along the way.

The duo has since gone on to tour in eleven countries, including shows in London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin. They’ve taken the stage at renowned venues such as The Bluebird Café in Nashville and The Green Note in London, and they’ve performed at festivals like Riverbend in Chattanooga,TN, Rhythm and Blooms in Knoxville, TN and the Kerrville Folk Festival where they were named New Folk Finalists.

Kelley McRae’s latest release, The Wayside, is a testament to the inspiration inherent in the American landscape, the grief intrinsic to change, and the hope that comes with stepping onto unknown soil. The Wayside, McRae says, “is the place along the side of the road where things get left behind, or where you go to rest awhile, or where you go find something you lost along the way.” McRae’s songs sip life from the tension between holding on and letting go, blooming in their rich search for truths.

Released in April, 2016, The Wayside debuted at #7 on the Euro-Americana charts and hit #4 on the Roots Music Reports Top 50 Contemporary Folk chart. It has continued to impress critics: Penguin Eggs Magazine calls Kelley’s voice ‘hauntingly beautiful, echoing the best of Gillian Welch’ and New York Music Daily calls the duo ‘the real deal.’ Folk Radio UK describes McRae as ‘evocative of the finest moments of Emmylou.’ Mike Penard of Radio France says, “With hundreds of new releases each year, there are maybe ten or twenty magical moments. The Wayside is one of those moments.”

They rounded off 2015 with a sold out second birthday show and a new live acoustic EP, and just last month they released their first full length studio album This One’s For You.
